Team USA’s quest to win an elusive Olympic gold medal in the men’s 4×100-meter relay turned disastrous Friday, when a botched handoff between Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek doomed any chance for the Americans.
Canada took gold, South Africa took second and Great Britain took third, but on a day when Team USA was forced to race without Noah Lyles — who tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and announced Thursday night that his Olympics was over after the 200-meter final — as their anchor, it didn’t even matter.

The blame seemed to fall on Bednarek for seeming to leave early.
But it was just the latest instance of Team USA falling short of gold in the event, and it led to plenty of criticism from the broadcast afterward.
“That’s a disaster,” one of the broadcasters said on NBC after a replay of the first handoff was shown.
