A fresh round of communication devices used by Hizbollah were detonated across Lebanon on Wednesday, a day after exploding pagers killed 12 people and maimed thousands in an attack the militant group blamed on Israel.

A spokesperson for Hizbollah said new blasts had taken place, while witnesses and social media confirmed that more devices had detonated. Numerous images posted on social media suggested they were walkie-talkies.

At least one blast took place near a funeral in Beirut’s southern suburbs, organised by Hizbollah for several of the people killed on Tuesday.

In the initial attack, thousands of pagers carried by the militant group’s members detonated across Lebanon, injuring almost 2,800 in addition to the deaths, according to the country’s health authorities.

Almost 300 of those hurt remained in a critical condition on Wednesday; those killed in the initial attack included two children.

Hizbollah has threatened retaliation against Israel for the initial attack, while Israel has not commented on the blasts. The two enemies have been engaged in cross-border fire since Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, prompting fears of a wider war.
