WFAN’s Brandon Tierney opened Tuesday’s “Tiki and Tierney” show by ripping the Yankees’ general manager, saying that if the team comes up short this season, he should lose his job.

“Brian Cashman, at least if I run the Yankees, Brian Cashman has four weeks to earn an extension,” Tierney said. “Now I could be really mean and say even if they perform well over the next four weeks, he still doesn’t deserve an extension. … Brian Cashman should, in terms of job status, should be hanging by a thread.”

Cashman, who has held the general manager job since 1998, has come under fire due to the Yankees’ failure to keep winning world championships with regularity since the beginning of his reign, with 2009 being the only one since 2000.

The Yankees’ current slide, which has seen their season go from potentially historic to merely hanging on in the division, has exacerbated matters, as Cashman’s trade of pitcher Jordan Montgomery for injured outfielder Harrison Bader at the deadline looks worse by the day. Montgomery has a 1.47 ERA for the Cardinals while Bader has yet to take an at-bat in a Yankee uniform.

“I don’t know what Hal [Steinbrenner’s] thinking, I don’t even care right now,” Tierney said. “… Ever since they won the championships, not ’09, all the championships before that, we know who built the team and it wasn’t Brian Cashman. it was obviously Stick Michael and Bob Watson.

“And post-dynasty, whether it’s [Jeff] Weaver, whether it’s Kevin Brown, whether it’s Randy Johnson, whether it’s Sonny Gray, whether it’s Jacoby Ellsbury or Gary Sheffield or [Jason] Giambi or other veteran retread starting pitchers, or [Bobby] Abreu playing the outfield, or [Josh] Donaldson’s dopey two-year, $50 million deal or [Aaron] Hicks’ asinine seven-year deal or [DJ] LeMahieu, who looks like he’s 50. DJ LeMahieu looks like he’s done. Giving him six years, or trading a middle of the rotation lefty [Montgomery] for a guy who’s a soft-hitting center fielder.

“Let’s just be clear about this, and I say this with no pride or joy but I do say this with conviction. Brian Cashman has not earned the right to rebuild this team the way this team needs to be rebuilt.”

The Yankees, who hold a 4 1/2-game lead in the AL East heading into Wednesday, are still on track to make the playoffs for the sixth straight season, and have only missed the postseason four times under Cashman.

This offseason, though, will be pivotal, as Aaron Judge hits free agency and the Yankees will need to spend big to keep him in New York.
