The United States is experiencing a severe shortage of nurses as it is discovered thousands of positions are unfilled.

In the state of Washington, a new survey found hospitals have more than 6,000 fewer nurses than needed.

Hospitals in the state have taken to putting up help wanted signs in an attempt to hire more nurses.

The survey, conducted by Washington State Hospital Association, asked 80 hospitals – who make up 85 per cent of beds in the state – and found widespread shortages.

In addition to the 6,000 fewer fulltime nurses than needed, there were also approximately 3,000 less travelling nurses filling in the gap.

Burnout from the pandemic, new career opportunities, the vaccine mandate and moving away all play a role in the shortages.
