The Seahawks are 1-0 after Monday night’s thriller in Seattle, but the victory did not come without a price.
Early in the second quarter, Seahawks safety and former Jet, Jamal Adams, blitzed Russell Wilson on a third-down pass rush and delivered a big hit on his former teammate. But as Adams got up after the play, he limped off the field in obvious pain, and after being examined in the medical tent, he was put on a cart and sent to the locker room. He was ruled doubtful and did not return.
After the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said it was a quad injury.
“His quadricep tendon I think got damaged some tonight,” Carroll told reporters. “He got hurt. So it’s a serious injury.”
The Seahawks got off to a surprising start to the 2022 season, defeating Wilson and the Broncos, 17-16, on their home field in the quarterback’s first game since Seattle traded him to Denver in the offseason for a haul of draft picks. Geno Smith, who won the starting job after being Wilson’s backup in Seattle last season, completed over 80 percent of his passes and threw for two touchdowns, leading his team to an upset victory in front of a raucous home crowd.
Losing Adams for any period of time, however, isn’t ideal. The Seahawks traded two first-round picks to the Jets for Adams ahead of the 2020 season as they attempted to chase a championship in the final years of Wilson’s tenure. While that didn’t work out and Adams largely has struggled in coverage (his PFF coverage grades in his two seasons in Seattle have been 53.1 and 47.4), he remains one of the team’s blue-chip players.
The three-time Pro Bowler has already missed time with the Seahawks, including the last five games of 2021 after suffering a torn labrum. In total, he has missed nine games in his two seasons in Seattle.
Josh Jones replaced Adams after he went down with the injury, and figures to be the likely replacement should he miss significant time.
