The vaunted Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue has bestowed an honor.
Christen Harper, who is engaged to Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, and her close friend Katie Austin were given dual honors as the 2022 rookies of the year.
“This whole brand is what you guys represent — fabulous people supporting each other, doing their thing bigger and better all the time,” SI swimsuit editor-in-chief MJ Day told the two models over a video call while delivering the news. “Really motivated, smart individuals who keep creating opportunities for themselves and keep growing. You do it for each other, and you do it for random strangers and you do it for us. It’s pretty awesome. There’s never been two more worthy people.”
Because they won this honor, the two models will be invited to appear in next year’s magazine.
Other rookies in this year’s issue included Georgina Burke, Kamie Crawford, Cindy Kimberly, Maye Musk, Olivia Ponton and Duckie Thot.
“SCREAMING. CRYING,” Harper wrote on her Instagram story after learning of the news, including several crying emojis. “The biggest honor ever. Thank you @si_swimsuit. I love you so much.”
Harper was extremely excited to be included in the magazine spread.
“I am so humbled, honored and truthfully speechless to be a rookie in @si_swimsuit 2022,” she wrote on Instagram this past May. “Every year SI breaks boundaries and this year is no different. So honored to be included in this group of inspiring women.”
Harper and Goff got engaged this past June. “Still on cloud 9 from the best weekend of my life,” Harper exclaimed at the time.
The couple revels in each others’ accomplishments. Goff could be seen on Harper’s Instagram stories proudly carrying a framed photo from his fiancé’s swimsuit spread. Earlier this month, Harper lauded Goff on Instagram when he earned the honor of FedEx Air Player of the Week after he threw for 378 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-45 loss to the Seahawks.
