Not even being an NFL quarterback could impress Matt Ryan’s kids.
The Falcons star told The Post his 3-year-old twin sons, Marshall and Johnny, are two of his toughest critics.
“They do not think I’m cool. They tell me I’m a bad dancer — I get all that kind of stuff from them. And I’m not [a good dancer]. I mean, they’re not wrong,” Ryan said, laughing.
“So yeah, they’re not impressed with me.”
Ryan announced on Instagram in November 2017, that he and his wife Sarah were expecting twins. At the time, he shared a photo of the couple smiling under a gold “2” balloon, as Sarah held two red onesies.
Sarah also shared the same snap, writing, “There’s just something about the number 2 in our house, I guess.”
She added that it was a “long road” to her pregnancy, and later explained to People that the babies were born six weeks after she was placed on hospital bed rest due to pregnancy complications.
Ryan and his wife both attended Boston College and tied the knot in 2011.
Despite having a resume that includes a 2016 NFL MVP, First-Team All-Pro selection, 2008 NFL Rookie of the Year and five Pro Bowl selections, Ryan’s sons haven’t yet latched onto his star power.
“They know I play football and they know football and that kind of stuff, but I don’t really think they kind of understand what’s going on. We’ll say, they’re more like Stone Cold right now,” Ryan said, comparing his sons’ “bundle of energy” to the WWE legend.
The quarterback and retired wrestler teamed up with Tide to promote its #TurnToCold initiative in an effort to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help consumers save money.
One day, though, Ryan’s sons will understand their dad’s impact on the game of football. In the meantime, the quarterback is still carving out his legacy.
In September, Ryan surpassed recently retired Saints quarterback Drew Brees to become the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards through his first 14 seasons.
Ryan reached the milestone against the Buccaneers on a pass to rookie tight end Kyle Pitts in the second quarter. He is currently ninth on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list, behind former Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
“I feel good,. I feel like I’m at a point in my career where I really feel like I’ve got a good routine. I understand what it takes for me to get myself ready to go. What I need to do during the course of the week to be ready, to be at my best on Sunday hasn’t been perfect by any stretch of the imagination,” Ryan said while reflecting on the team’s early-season struggles.
“But I think there’s a lot of positives and I think I can continue to get better, continue to improve and continue to try. And you know, my goal every week is to just put a winning performance in for our team and play the position well enough to give us a chance to win. And that’s what I’m going to continue to try and do.”
The Falcons dropped to 5-7, after a division loss to the rival Buccaneers on Sunday, when Ryan was sacked five times. But with five games to go in the regular season, Atlanta still has time to climb their way into playoff position.
Ryan has led the Falcons through adversity this season by not letting “doubt and complacency creep in.”
He believes in staying consistent when it comes to “intensity and urgency,” even when it seems as though the odds are stacked against Atlanta.
“And you know, that’s part of being a leader. That’s part of, you know, being a teammate is trying to, you know, hold each other accountable and get the best out of each other,” Ryan said. “And that’s certainly going to be the mindset that I have as we move forward throughout the rest of the year.”
The Falcons visit the Panthers for another NFC South matchup on Sunday.
