Urban Meyer would like to confirm that Urban Meyer berates his own assistant coaches.
A day after an NFL.com report said that Meyer challenged each of his assistant coaches to explain what they’ve won and forced them to defend their resumes, calling them losers, Meyer didn’t deny it when asked about the incident by Jay Glazer, though Glazer clarified on Twitter that Meyer didn’t admit to calling the coaches “losers.”
“He said, ‘Yes, absolutely, I’m hard on my coaches. I get on them,’ ” Glazer said on Fox NFL Sunday. “But he still thinks he has the support of ownership.”
It may be true that Jaguars owner Shad Khan still supports Meyer. It also may be true that he’s the only one left doing so.
The former Ohio State coach’s tenure in Jacksonville has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. Meyer reportedly got upset over the team losing preseason games, failed to catch a team flight home after a loss, was caught on video letting loose with a woman who wasn’t his wife after missing the said flight, and seems to have completely lost the locker room.
Meyer did deny the part of the report in which Marvin Jones’ frustration was detailed, Glazer said. According to NFL.com, Jones was so angry with Meyer’s criticism of the receivers that he left the team facility and had to be convinced to come back.
Jaguars players also reportedly complained to the Rams following their game about Meyer. One example would be his treatment of James Robinson. Though Meyer said Robinson sat against the 49ers last week because of an injury, the report said he instead ordered the benching after a fumble, giving carries to Carlos Hyde — who played under Meyer at Ohio State — instead. Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence had to intercede to get Robinson back on the field.
Though Khan declined comment to NFL.com, there’s currently no reason to believe a change is coming, according to the report.
