Might the Giants actually get Kadarius Toney back on the field and into a game before the end of his rookie season?
It could happen.
Toney has been on the reserve/COVID-19 list and missed the past four games with an oblique injury. The expectation is Toney will be cleared to return to the building this week and then a determination will be made whether he is healthy enough to face the Eagles on Sunday in Philly.
“Get him moving out there and we’ll see how he looks,” coach Joe Judge said Monday. “Obviously, he missed some time from injury and now with COVID. We’ll see how that set him back and give him the opportunity to go out there, move around and see if he can help us this week or not.”
The Giants put reserve cornerback Keion Crossen, one of their best special teams players, on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
“That’s a player we want to have for his roles in the kicking game and also on defense for depth,” Judge said.
WR Sterling Shepard was put on season-ending injured reserve after he tore his Achilles tendon against the Cowboys. … The Giants signed LB Jaylon Smith and CB Jarren Williams from the practice squad. Both were activated and played Sunday.
Smith arrived late last week and did not have one full practice with the Giants, and yet he played 17 snaps on defense for his new team against his former team. He finished with four tackles. The Cowboys cut Smith, a 2016 second-round draft pick, on Oct. 5 and he was picked up and by the Packers and played in two games before getting released.
“I really liked the way this guy responded and he’s been a pleasure to coach in the short window we’ve had,” Judge said. “He went out there, he played fast, he’s able to go ahead and get his hat on a few people to make some plays. He’s been a pleasure to have in the program so far.”
Williams, undrafted out of the University at Albany, made his first NFL start because Adoree’ Jackson and rookie Aaron Robinson were on the reserve/COVID-19 list and played 70 of the 71 snaps on defense, out of necessity. The Cowboys did not have a reception of longer than 19 yards.
“I think he’s a guy that’s got a future that we can go ahead and keep on developing with, but I like the way Jarren works and I think there’s some upside with him as a player,” Judge said. “He definitely has the right attitude as a person.”
Final Pro Bowl voting will be revealed Wednesday. As of Monday’s voting, safety Xavier McKinney had the best chance at second in the NFC (fifth overall). Kicker Graham Gano was also second in the NFC (seventh overall). DT Leonard Williams was fifth in the NFC (10th overall). Selection for the Pro Bowl is based on voting by players, coaches and fans.
