Assistant Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie says China and Russia have been “emboldened” by a perceived “weakness” from the United States.
“Weakness is provocative – It’s very true of politics, it’s truer in geopolitics,” Mr Hastie said.
“I think the somewhat disorderly withdrawal out of Afghanistan has emboldened authoritarian powers, and that’s what we’re seeing.
“And that’s the new challenge for us, and we’ve really got to think things through.”
