Victor Cruz has solved a mystery from the infamous Giants’ boat photo in Miami.
After defeating Washington 19-10 on New Year’s Day to finish the 2016 regular season 11-5, a group of Giants receivers including Cruz, Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shephard and Roger Lewis jetted down to Miami to hit up Liv Nightclub, go out on a yacht and party with celebrities like Trey Songz and Justin Bieber.
The following week, the Giants would get walloped by the Packers, 38-13, at Lambeau Field, marking an early playoff exit.
The ignominious boat trip has lived on in the zeitgeist for the ensuing years, and Cruz has previously expressed deep regret over it.
What no one had previously discussed, however, was why Beckham had committed the fashion faux pas of wearing Timberland boots out on a yacht.
“When we flew to Miami, he was like, ‘Man, I don’t have any shoes,’” Cruz told Chris Long on the “Green Light Podcast”.
“I was like, ‘I only have these Timbs for you.’ So those are actually my boots that he’s wearing in the photo.”
In 2020, Cruz spoke about the trip to E! Online.
“This photo will haunt me for the rest of my life,” he said.
“It was more so the feeling of, ‘Man, when am I going to get to do this again? When am I going to get to be an athlete, win a football game, go on a private jet, go to Miami the same night?’” Cruz told the outlet.
“It was one of those things where I was just like, ‘I think I’m just going to feed our ego tonight.’”
He was of the belief that if the trip had taken place at an earlier point in time they would’ve escaped without controversy.
“If this was 1999, no one would have known about the trip, we would have went, had a great time, come back,” Cruz said.
“And then had we won the game, that’s the part that kind of bothers me, too. If we won the game, they’d be like, ‘Go to Miami every week, apparently that’s the good luck charm.’ The fact that we lost, left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.”
