Matthew Perry’s ex Kayti Edwards is speaking out following the tragic death of the “Friends” star.
Edwards, a former model and Julie Andrews’ step-granddaughter, reportedly dated Perry in 2006. In a recent interview, she claimed that the final photo Perry shared on Instagram, which shows him relaxing in his hot tub, could be a sign that he was “not sober” at the time of his passing.
“I know Matthew and I know that he wouldn’t have just drowned,” she told the UK Sun on Saturday. “I think he might have taken pills in the week leading up to this.”
Perry was found dead of an apparent drowning at his Los Angeles home on Oct. 28. He was 54. A person who TMZ reports was his assistant found the actor submerged in the hot tub. He proved unresponsive before first responders could arrive on the scene.
No drugs were found at rethesidence aside from some prescription medications. A conclusive finding as to cause of death is still listed as “deferred,” but no foul play is suspected. The coroner ordered more tests, including for toxicology.
Perry said in 2021 he was sober and that he estimated he’d spent nearly $9 million trying to get clean throughout his life.
Edwards claims, however, that “things aren’t adding up.”
She alleged, speaking of the actor’s drug use, “He was paranoid and would take them all, so there wasn’t any evidence, and then go out for more when he was ready to.”
She also said that his last Instagram post — which eerily showed him in his hot tub with a caption referring to himself as “Mattman” — was allegedly a tell that the late actor was using illicit drugs.
“That Mattman thing was not something he did when he was sober. Mattman would come out when he was not sober and he felt kind of invincible,” Edwards claimed to the outlet.
“I was around when he was getting high, although I was not getting high with him, and when I would say maybe he should cool it a little bit with the drugs, he would say, ‘No, I’m Mattman.’”
She added, “He had a thing with water when he was doing drugs,” alleging that he was once found “naked and high” in a neighbor’s swimming pool and that he was “always alone” when he did drugs.
The Post reached out to Perry’s rep for comment.
Perry often spoke about his drug and alcohol struggles. While promoting his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” he noted that he was “grateful” to co-star Jennifer Aniston because she had reached out to him the most.
Aniston — alongside Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer — paid tribute to the late star at his funeral in Los Angeles on Nov. 8.
Days earlier, Perry’s friend Athenna Crosby, 25, who was one of the last people to see him alive, insisted that the actor was “100 percent” sober before his tragic passing.
“In the interaction that I had with him, he was extremely positive, sober, acting normal, spoke very well, did not give me any impression that he was under [the influence of] drugs or alcohol of any kind,” she told Fox News Digital earlier this month.
“So, I think people are speculating that this was a relapse situation,” she added. “I just want to defend him and say that it was not.”
