Chris Collinsworth learned a costly lesson about buying fish.

The NBC announcer hilariously explained during Thursday’s 49ers-Seahawks game how what he thought was a good Thanksgiving bargain at the legendary Pike Place Market in Seattle instead set him back nearly $1,000.

“I never buy fish. You’re in the market, you say, ‘OK, I’m going to buy some fish, I’m going to take it home for Thanksgiving,’” Collinsworth said during the first quarter of the 49ers’ 31-13 road win. “So I go in there and see the thing, this big fish is there and it says $35. I go ‘Well, that’s pretty good, that’s about the same price as at a restaurant, right, $34.99 right. … I come out and I go, ‘I’ll take two.”

“70 bucks,” NBC play-by announcer Mike Tirico quipped.

“I thought 72 bucks,” Collinsworth said in response.

And here’s where Collinsworth’s purchase went awry, explaining that the total was not as simple as doubling the price listed.

“Eight-hundred dollars! I was like, ‘Per pound?’” Collinsworth exclaimed.

“Key word, per pound,” Tirico responded.

Collinsworth then put a bow on his story.

“But you can’t go back once you said you want two fish,” Collinsworth said while laughing off the situation. “They already got them loaded up.”

Collinsworth’s story provided a highlight in what was otherwise a very one-sided and unexciting game between the 49ers and Seahawks.

Seattle could not get much going offensively against a revived 49ers defense, and the 49ers diced up Seattle’s defense behind strong games from Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while Samuel had 94 total yards and one rushing touchdown as the 49ers (8-3) took control of the NFC West.

Collinsworth won’t have to worry about buying $800 worth of fish this weekend when he and Tirico head to Los Angeles for the “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the Chargers and the visiting Ravens.
