Brennan Othmann was assigned to Hartford in the AHL, the Rangers announced Tuesday.
The young forward sat for all but a pair of shifts in the second period of Monday’s ugly loss to Vancouver before returning to more normal playing time in the third.
It was Othmann’s third NHL game and while he showed promise, the 21-year-old might not be ready for the role the Rangers need to fill in the absence of Kaapo Kakko, who has been out with a leg injury since Nov. 27.
Kakko took part in Monday’s morning skate, with head coach Peter Laviolette saying there’s been progress in his recovery, adding he has “no real restrictions.”
The Rangers don’t play again until Thursday in St. Louis, but they could make another roster move Tuesday to fill Othmann’s spot.
Othmann showed flashes in his short stint with the Rangers, but there is a belief he’ll benefit from more minutes with Hartford, since he’s still developing.
