Jordan Hicks won’t be a part of the Yankees’ revamped pitching staff.
Hicks, whom the Yankees had been linked to this week, signed a four-year, $44 million deal with the Giants on Friday, ESPN.com reported.
Hicks has been a reliever his whole career — aside from eight starts in the 2022 season for the Cardinals — but is expected to be a part of the Giants rotation, according to the report.
The Yankees have spent their offseason searching for pitching and after being rejected by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who signed a 10-year, $325 million deal with the Dodgers, they signed Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37 million deal Thursday night.
The Yankees, though, could still be in the market for additional staff depth.
Hicks, whose fastball has touched 103 MPH, pitched the first five seasons of his career the Cardinals before being dealt to the Blue Jays at the trade deadline.
Hicks, 27, has been a part-time closer and has 32 career saves.
He has dealt with arm issues throughout his career and had Tommy John surgery in 2019.
Last season between St. Louis and Toronto, Hicks appeared in 65 games, striking out 81 batters in 65 2/3 innings and boasting a 3.29 ERA.
“Teams believe there’s plenty more to unlock with Hicks, and it is fueling a ripe market,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan said about Hicks’ potential at the start of free agency.
“He’s the youngest domestic pitcher on the market, having just turned 27. His fastball sits at 100 mph and runs up to 104. Everything is there for greatness. Hicks just needs to find it.”
MLB.com reported on Thursday that the Yankees and Astros still had interest in Hicks.
