Whoopi Goldberg nearly moved Sheryl Lee Ralph to tears Wednesday on “The View” by officially asking her to reprise her role in the upcoming “Sister Act 3.”
After reminiscing about working together on 1993’s “Sister Act 2” Goldberg, 68, told the “Abbott Elementary” star that the daytime talk show is planning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the second installment by inviting cast members to come on and talk about the movie.
“Oh, I would love to,” Ralph, 67, accepted the invitation.
“But I will also do this,” Goldberg kept going. “We’re in the process of putting together ‘3.’ Would you come be part of it, whatever it is?”
Ralph’s eyes welled up with tears, also accepting that invite by repeating, “Whoopi! Whoopi!”
Goldberg then closed the segment by mentioning Ralph’s charitable efforts which made the guest cry even more.
“Before we go, we want to mention that, later this month, she’s going to be honored by the ACLU and awarded the Southern California Bill of Rights Award for all of her incredible work with the DIVA Foundation, an organization that she founded to empower vulnerable communities to achieve better health outcomes,” Goldberg said.
“She’s been doing this for the longest time,” she added. “Congratulations, this is the real deal, this woman.”
Tyler Perry will be a producer of “Sister Act 3,” which will eventually be distributed and streamed on Disney+, although the flick does not yet have an official release date.
“I love the idea of us making this happen but you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to,” Perry said on “The View” in September 2022. “So we’ve got a good script. We’re off to a great start. We’re just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction so we can get it going.”
Goldberg later added, “[Disney was] sort of lukewarm for the longest time, they said nobody wanted to see it, and then Tyler went in and said, ‘I want to see it. The next thing I knew, we were on! That’s the power of TV.”
Goldberg starred in the first two “Sister Act” movies, released in 1992 and 1993. She played a Las Vegas showgirl named Deloris Van Cartier, who was placed in a San Francisco convent by the Witness Protection Program after she witnessed a murder. For her safety she pretends to be a nun named Sister Mary Clarence.
In the sequel, Delores is invited back to the convent to help resurrect the choir and save their school from closing. Ralph played Florence Watson the mother of aspiring singer Rita Watson (played by Lauryn Hill) who joins the choir and learns to find her voice with some help from Delores.
