Sir Craig Oliver, former director of communications for Lord David Cameron, said it was clear before Sunak’s apology that the Conservative campaign would be on the back foot today.

Speaking on the BBC’s Today programme, Oliver said: “It is a very important moment for the country and for showing that you are being prime ministerial. The problem for Rishi Sunak this morning is that he is accused of not getting what it is to be PM and what his duties are.”

“It is a huge problem for the campaign, it is going to distract massively and opponents will make him pay a very heavy price for it.”
