Jon DeChambeau, the father of golf star Bryson DeChambeau, died at age 63 after a battle with kidney disease.
Bryson announced his father’s death on social media on Saturday.
“Love you Dad. I’m sad to see you go but you’ve been through way too much pain in this life. I’m so happy you are at peace,” DeChambeau wrote on Twitter. “Now you get to be with me and watch me at every event I play. Thank you for being an amazing Dad and I’ll see you in the next life.”
Jon was able to attend Bryson’s first Masters in 2016 while undergoing hemodialysis between each of the rounds, according to Golf Digest. At that time Bryson was the reigning U.S. amateur champion. He turned pro shortly after Jon was able to watch all of his eight PGA Tour wins, including the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot either in person or on television.
Jon DeChambeau received a kidney transplant in 2017 from Ron Bankofier, a former high school golf teammate of Bryson’s. He was also offered a kidney by Fresno State golf coach Mike Watney — the uncle of PGA Tour player Nick Watney, but it was not a match.
Jon DeChambeau spoke about Watney’s gesture on a local television station in 2017.
“You go from a handshake to a hug is what’s really happened,” DeChambeau said “When you see a friend you shake their hand or kind of say hey to them. When you see somebody that gave you life you hug them and tell them you love them.”
