It’s the dreaded holiday party season. My company came back to the office a few weeks ago, and they are actually planning to hold a party. I struggled with having a good reason to avoid the party in past years, but would it be frowned upon to say I am uncomfortable attending because of COVID-19?
That’s crazy! (Not you — them!) I get stressed on behalf of all employees during a normal holiday season because I’ve seen too many employees commit too many career-limiting or destroying moves during holiday parties. Employees have enough challenges to navigate under normal circumstances, making sure they are not crossing boundaries. So when you throw in music, an unlimited buffet and an open bar — well, I could write a book. You don’t have to embarrass your employer for making a bad decision to move forward with a party at this time, but you can gracefully, quietly bow out without fear.
I’m expecting a year-end bonus, but I have another job offer that I want to accept. If I resign, but give a notice date after the date bonuses are supposed to be paid, am I still entitled to my bonus?
That depends on so many factors and it varies by state, type of work, your company’s policy on bonuses, notice periods and so on. Sales commissions are often earned and have to be laid out whenever anyone leaves, regardless of when that is.
Some bonus plans say that you have to be employed at the time bonuses are paid to be eligible. Remember that generally most employers don’t have to accept an employee’s notice period. You can give two weeks’ notice or two months’ notice, and your employer can make your last day of employment the day you notify them instead.
Bottom line: Before you resign, make sure you understand your company’s policy so that there are no surprises.
