The disdain for Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canda reached PPG Paints Arena as the NHL’s Penguins opened their season on Tuesday night.
There are 11 days before the Steelers again take the field, but Pittsburgh sports fans didn’t miss a chance to call for the ouster of the Steelers coach with chants of “Fire Canada” ringing out during a 4-2 Penguins loss at the hands of the Blackhawks.
The chants may have confused Penguins and Blackhawks players, with a number of them hailing from Canada.
The chants — recorded by WPXI sports reporter Jenna Harner — occurred in the second period with the Pens holding a 1-0 lead over.
“Fire Canada” has been a bit of a rallying cry for frustrated Steelers fans who have become fed up with the team’s struggling offense.
Similar chants occurred on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium during the Steelers’ 17-10 win over the Ravens.
The Steelers are 3-2 after the first five weeks of NFL the season but have off this week with a bye.
Pittsburgh’s next game is Week 7 in Los Angeles against the Rams.
Canada’s seat started to heat up as the Steelers got off to a slow start and the offense struggled, but the win over the Ravens likely bought him some more time.
The Steelers’ offense ranks among the bottom in the NFL despite being atop the AFC North.
Their 15.8 points, 268.2 total yards and 80.2 rushing yards per game are all third-fewest in the entire league.
“Not too many people like Matt Canada in this city right now. Probably the most hated person in the city,” The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly said on “The Pat McAfee Show” Tuesday. “Which is sad to say. It’s a guy trying to do his job, but it just hasn’t produced results whatsoever.”
“Everybody who’s out there who’s firing Matt Canada chants, will probably keep saying it until probably January,” Kaboly added.
