Lowy Institute Senior Fellow Richard McGregor says China and the United States have decided to “stabilise” the relationship between the two countries at the moment.
It comes as US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have held a virtual meeting.
“And they’ve been looking for points of agreement and looking for ways in which Mr Biden can talk to Mr Xi and to settle things down,” Mr McGregor told Sky News Australia.
“Now that does not mean that they’re sort of heading for the sunny uplands long-term, the same structural competition contest, points of conflict are all still there, but the two sides have made a decision…to try and stabilise things for the moment.”
