On Sunday the Commanders will be honoring ten all-time franchise greats as voted by their fans but Chris Cooley will not be attending.

The tight end said on “The Kevin Sheehan Show” this week he declined the invitation

“I don’t want to,” he said. “I’m very appreciative of being voted in, and I’m very appreciative of my time while I was there. At this point, I don’t have a lot of desire to be involved with the Washington Commanders. It’s not the team name that does it.”

Cooley, who hauled in 429 passes for 4711 yards and 33 touchdowns and made two Pro Bowl appearances over his nine-year NFL career in Washington, didn’t go into his specific reasoning for skipping the ceremony. He did, however, show his appreciation to fans.

“I feel for all of the fans for where they are at, and I still appreciate the people that are still fans, that are still diehards,” he said. “Because you know very well, as much as me, even at times maybe you even find yourself cheering against [the Commanders]. It’s still the only game you are rooting. I’m not going to watch a Bills or Broncos game and say I’m a Broncos fan, I hope. There’s no other team, so my only interest is still Washington.”

Cooley’s choice comes at a time franchise owner Dan Snyder is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, including a reported push to remove him from the team. Snyder reportedly told a close associate he has enough information to “blow up” several NFL owners, league officials, and commissioner Roger Goodell and that Snyder hired private investigators to get that information.

Snyder called the report is false but now comes under more scrutiny. He is still under investigation by the league and a congressional committee who are looking into workplace misconduct in the franchise after a July 2020 report from the Washington Post revealed accounts from 15 former female employees who alleged sexual harassment by staffers over the course of 18 years.

This week, Colts owner Jim Irsay said there was “merit” to the idea of Snyder’s removal and that be believes there are enough votes to do so.
