Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, this year’s No. 4 overall draft pick, will remain in the concussion protocol and miss Week 3 against the Ravens, head coach Shane Steichen said.
Gardner Minshew will be starting in place of the injured Richardson.
“He’s been in these situations,” Steichen told reporters of Minshew. “Obviously, he got a lot of work this week, so he’ll be prepared and ready to go.”
Richardson self-reported the concussion, pulling himself off the field under his own power during the second quarter of Week 2’s 31-20 win over the Texans.
It is believed that Richardson suffered the blow while scoring a 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, adding to the Colts’ lead.
The former University of Florida signal-caller has not practiced all week after dealing with the concussion-like symptoms.
“I told him that he can’t take hits like me. He sees me out there running, but he can’t do that, so I told him that he’s not me built like me,” wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. said, according to The Athletic. “Everybody is trying to kill him, too, because he is the quarterback, so I told him he’s gotta be careful.”
Richardson has completed 30 of his 47 passes for 279 yards and has one passing touchdown and one interception in his rookie season.
The 21-year-old has also rushed for 75 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns on the ground.
Mindshew, 27, was selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Jaguars.
In his NFL career, he has started 24 games and has appeared in 34 total.
Minshew has 45 passing touchdowns to just 15 interceptions and has completed 63.2 percent of his throws, accumulating 6,803 yards through the air.
