The Labour party has repeated its pledge to open 350 banking hubs across Britain in the next five years as part of efforts to revive face-to-face high street services.

The hubs, to provide in-person banking services such as cash withdrawals and access to advice and support, would be funded by ‘the major banks’, Labour said.

They would be run by the Post Office and Cash Access UK, a not-for-profit company owned by nine high street banks. The two business currently operate more than 100 banking hubs around the UK.

“After 14 years of the Tories, many of our high streets have been reduced to ghost towns,” said Rachel Reeves, shadow chancellor. “This election is a chance to . . . make our high streets better off.”
