Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t do Mike McCarthy any favors on Sunday.
Addressing speculation that McCarthy will need to get the Cowboys over the hump in the postseason and prove that he can coach them deep into the playoffs, Jones didn’t exactly put that to bed.
“I just think his record speaks for itself,” Jones said, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “I think of what he’s done and that we’ve put ourselves in this position over these last three years, I think that does speak for itself. We’ve got a lot of football left and no small part thanks to Mike. … We’ll see how each game goes.”
The Cowboys have come up short in each of the previous three seasons, missing the playoffs entirely in 2020.
In 2021, they were knocked out in the wild-card game by the 49ers despite the Cowboys winning the NFC East.
The 49ers bested Dallas yet again last season in the NFC divisional round.
The lack of playoff success and the embarrassing nature in which they’ve been knocked out of the playoffs seems to have become too much for Jones, who hasn’t been to the Super Bowl since Dallas last won in 1996.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that those around the league and some inside the Cowboys’ organization believe that McCarthy’s job security will be measured by how the team does this year in the playoffs.
“If the Cowboys play well in the postseason, McCarthy would have an excellent chance to keep his job,” Schefter wrote. “But if they struggle and end the season with an embarrassing loss, as has happened in each of the past two years, then some say that change could come to Dallas.
“The situation remains unsettled either way, and both the Cowboys and McCarthy — fairly or unfairly — have plenty to prove Sunday against Washington and then in the postseason.”
The Cowboys captured their second NFC East title in the last three years with Sunday’s win over the Commanders.
Dallas will face the Packers in the NFC wild-card round, and Cowboys star Dak Prescott is eager to show that they can do more than just win a division title.
“Great to win the division. Proud of these guys. … Awesome year, but we’re damn sure not done,” he told Erin Andrews after the game.
