With Aaron Rodgers’ future uncertain as he begins his “darkness retreat,” the Jets are not wasting time in their pursuit of a veteran quarterback.
The Jets will host the recently released Derek Carr for a visit this weekend, The Post’s Paul Schwartz confirmed. Carr was officially cut by the Raiders on Tuesday after nine years as the team’s starter. He visited the Saints last week but told the Raiders he would not accept a trade, leading to his release before he was guaranteed more than $40 million.
Jets owner Woody Johnson said last month that he would “absolutely” spend money on a free-agent quarterback after Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2021, struggled during the 2022 season.
Carr, 31, was benched by the Raiders for their final two games of the season as the franchise decided to move in a different direction. The four-time Pro Bowler threw for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games during the 2022 season while completing 60.8 percent of his passes, his worst mark since his rookie season.
Rodgers is weighing whether to retire. Should he continue playing, it’s unclear if he would stay with the Packers, who have former first-round pick Jordan Love in waiting.
Jimmy Garoppolo is another big-name free agent who may be a possibility for the Jets. Because Carr was released outright by the Raiders, he is free to sign with a team now. Free agency begins March 15.
Carr has 35,222 career yards passing with 217 touchdowns, 99 interceptions and a 64.6 completion percentage. The Raiders selected him in the second round (No. 36 overall) in the 2014 NFL Draft.
