It was a golden retrieval.
Video captured the heartwarming moment a golden retriever named Macy was saved from a sinkhole it had been trapped in for a day — after being located by a fellow pup.
“This dog had fell into a five-foot hole,” Streator Fire Chief Fred McClellan told SWNS of the groundbreaking fiasco, which occurred on Feb. 11 in Streator, Illinois.
Macy’s owner Tom Price had just finished walking her, when, all of a sudden, the 11-year-old pooch seemingly vanished.
“Tom was at park with Macy, they were done with their walk and Macy never wants to leave,” Tom’s wife Liz recounted. “He said he was sitting in his car waiting for her and wasn’t watching her for a couple minutes, and he looked up and she was gone.”
She added, “Tom had seen a car go through park while he was sitting there that looked like my vehicle and thought maybe she had ran after the car and that someone took her, because there was not enough time for her to disappear.”
Unfortunately, despite scouring the area from “creek” to “timber,” Tom was unable to locate his beloved companion. The distraught couple subsequently notified Streator Animal Control, which posted an alert on Facebook.
Salvation finally came on Saturday after a chocolate labrador, named Wrigley, located Macy in a five-foot sinkhole in Marilla Park and alerted its owner by barking. Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.
The one-minute video shows the valiant fire brigade using a rope harness to extract the imperiled pup from a snowy hole in the ground.
Despite fire chief Fred McClellan losing his footing during the rescue, they manage to haul Macy to safety, whereupon she runs to her relieved owner Liz. Fortunately, a follow-up veterinary exam determined that Macy didn’t suffer any serious injuries during her subterranean adventure.
Following the rescue, Streator Animal Control posted a Facebook photo of a muddy Macy sitting in her owner’s car. They also shouted out Macy’s heroic savior Wrigley in a separate post, writing “Wrigley very easily also could have fallen into the sinkhole but luckily everything worked out!”
Authorities are currently warning locals to steer clear of Marilla Park, which SAC noted is “built on mines.”
