That’s one way to put it.
After a 15-year career ended with the Colts last season, the now-retired Matt Ryan is unloading some baggage.
“I mean, it was a s–t show, you know, it was a s–t show of 18 months basically is the best way to describe it,” Ryan told The Athletic. “But I think everybody in our family handled it well and came out of it stronger and in a really good spot.”
Ryan spent 14 with the Falcons, setting franchise records in nearly every quarterback statistic and winning MVP in 2016, before being traded to Indianapolis in March 2022.
Ryan said the tumultuous nature of his time with the Colts, which included his benching and the midseason hiring of Jeff Saturday as a coach, left a sour note in his mouth.
“It was one of those things, you know, I felt like I was going into it in a position where I’d probably seen it all in 14 years and then realize, ‘No you have not, you have not seen it all,’” Ryan told The Athletic. “There’s a lot of other things that are going to come up. It was a difficult year, there’s no doubt about it.”
The veteran quarterback started 12 games for the 4-12-1 Colts last season but was benched for a combination of Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger toward the end of the season.
Saturday, who was an ESPN analyst and a Georgia high school coach at the time of his hiring, did not have any college or NFL coaching experience.
Ryan is set to work at CBS as a game analyst alongside Tiki Barber and Andrew Catalon.
The Colts selected Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and acquired Gardner Minshew as insurance for the job.
Indianapolis also hired Shane Steichen, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, to take over as head coach.
