Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday called for a civilian administration in Gaza after the war, in his most detailed comments on how he envisions the strip when the fighting is over.

Netanyahu told the US Congress said Israel did not want to “resettle” the strip, but added that “for the foreseeable future”, the Jewish state “must retain overriding security control”.

He pledged that Israel would fight until it destroyed Hamas’s military capabilities and brought the hostages home. After that, the prime minister wanted to see a “demilitarised and deradicalised Gaza”.

Netanyahu called for a civilian administration run by Palestinians “who do not seek to destroy Israel”.
