Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg revealed Monday that he’s been diagnosed with cancer, and has already begun treatment.
“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, extended Baseball Family, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share some personal news,” he said in a statement shared to social media. “Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends.
“We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”

Sandberg, 64, played 16 MLB seasons and was a 10-time All-Star who won nine Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger awards.
He was arguably at his best in 1984, when his .314/.367/.520 slash line with an NL-leading 114 runs and 19 triples — plus 19 homers, 54 RBIs and 32 stolen bases — earned him an 8.6 WAR and MVP honors.
Over his playing career — which included a 13-game stint with the Phillies in 1981 — he hit .285 with 282 homers and 1,061 RBIs and posted a 67.9 WAR.
The iconic Cubs infielder was inducted into Cooperstown in 2005.
He went on to manage the Phillies, the team that selected him in the 20th round of the 1978 draft, for parts of three seasons, from 2013-15, guiding the team to a 119-159 mark during his tenure.
