Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says US President Joe Biden “slipped into analyst mode” when discussing the tensions between Ukraine and Russia, consternating allies with “imprecise” language.

It comes after Joe Biden said he expected Russia to invade and confirmed $US100 million of “sophisticated equipment” was already being shipped to help Ukraine.

Mr Flake said President Biden’s assessment of the situation was vague but “probably not off the mark”.

“Russia’s likely to get away with as much as they can and then come to regret it, that’s being interpreted as saying he thinks they’re going to invade,” Mr Flake told Sky News Australia.

Mr Flake said the comments were “causing some consternation” with America’s allies and in Ukraine.
