Justin Fields is waiving the white flag, issuing an apology to Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko for his criticism of the team’s coaching this week.
According to ESPN, the quarterback “apologized for any misunderstanding and made clear he values their coaching,” and the coaches “wholly believed” his apology and were “adamant” that they were on the same page as Fields.
Fields, 24, spoke to the media on Wednesday, deeming his play as “robotic” in the 27-17 loss to the Buccaneers and mentioned coaching as a possible root to the 0-2 problem the team is facing.
“You know, could be coaching, I think. At the end of the day, they are doing their job when they are giving me what to look at, but at the end of the day, I can’t be thinking about that when the game comes,” he said. “I prepare myself throughout the week, and then when the game comes, it’s time to play free at that point. Thinking less and playing more.”
A reporter followed up, asking Fields if there are too many coaching voices.
“I don’t think there’s too many coaching voices, but I just think when you’re fed a lot of information at a point in time and when you’re trying to think about that info when you’re playing that it doesn’t let you play like yourself,” he answered.
Fields later tried to clarify his comments, saying he was “not blaming anything on the coaches.”
The quarterback likely to be extra-eager to get back on track after falling to the Packers and Buccaneers since the Bears showed confidence in him during the offseason in trading the No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers and taking a top passing option for Fields in D.J. Moore rather than taking drafting another quarterback.
Moore has eight receptions for 129 yards across two games so far.
Fields is also working on his improving his production.
He has completed 60.6 percent of his passing attempts for 427 yards with two touchdowns and three picks.
Fields and the Bears will be looking to rebound Sunday, but it won’t be easy.
They face the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
