The NASA centre which tracks potentially hazardous space objects that could smash into the planet says an immense asteroid is on its way to Earth.

The asteroid, called 7482 (1994 PC1), is hurtling through space at more than 70,000 kilometres per hour, according to NASA’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies.

The asteroid has been classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid because of its potential to make “threatening close approaches to the Earth”.

The space rock measuring about a kilometre-wide will zoom past Earth next week and offer a fleeting vista for astronomers, passing within 2 million kilometres of the planet.
