Wagner paramilitary group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin is unlikely to escape “further retribution” from Russian president Vladimir Putin for his failed mutiny, CIA director Bill Burns said Thursday.

Putin and Prigozhin, who the US spy chief confirmed was in Belarus, are engaged in a “complicated dance”, Burns said at the Aspen Security Forum. “Putin is someone who thinks revenge is a dish best served cold,” he added.

Prigozhin’s failed mutiny blunted Putin’s standing with both regular Russians and the elite, Burns said. “For a lot of Russians watching this, used to this image of Putin as the arbiter of order, the question was, does the emperor have no clothes or, at least, why is it taking so long for him to get dressed?”
