Former New Zealand MP Dr Muriel Newman says a prominent Māori leader is “chasing headlines” by saying New Zealand should block Australian deportations.
It comes after National Māori Authority Chairman Matthew Tukaki called for planes to be turned around to stem local violence.
“There’s no way that his suggestion is a serious suggestion and certainly I’m 100 per cent sure our government would never countenance anything like that,” Dr Newman told Sky News host Caleb Bond.
“But the reality is … he’s chasing headlines, he sees this is a great way of making international news, and that’s all he’s doing.”
