PITTSBURGH — The Mets are taking every last precaution before listing Max Scherzer as their Friday starter.
Still undecided, according to manager Buck Showalter, is whether Scherzer will pitch in his normal spot, get pushed back in the rotation or skipped altogether. This after the right-hander departed his last start with left oblique fatigue.
The manager indicated a decision likely will have to be reached by Wednesday afternoon, allowing time for a contingency plan. Carlos Carrasco could start on normal rest against the Marlins if needed and David Peterson and Trevor Williams would be options.
“I wouldn’t say I am overly concerned, but I think like with all of our guys we have to make sure that we’re treating the individual and not putting anyone in harm’s way,” pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said before the Mets’ 8-2 loss to the Pirates on Tuesday. “We’ll continue to monitor how [Scherzer] feels. There is still a good chance he makes his regular start. But we have just got to make sure.”
Luis Guillorme started at DH for Triple-A Syracuse, going 1-for-4, in a rehab game as he moved closer to rejoining the major league roster. The infielder is returning from a left groin strain that has kept him sidelined for the last three weeks. The Mets planned to keep Guillorme out of the field Tuesday because of weather concerns.
“I think we feel pretty good about him defending, but just testing it on the field, too,” Showalter said. “It’s another step further away from the injury. That is the big thing. You think about all the things that go on in rehab, one of them is being another day from being hurt, so he is going to get that today. We just don’t want to put him in harm’s way.”
Trevor May, who is sidelined by COVID, likely will rejoin the Mets in Miami this weekend, according to Showalter. There is a chance the reliever will be ready Wednesday, but Showalter said he wasn’t counting on it.
Pete Alonso still hasn’t hit a career home run at PNC Park. It’s the only current National League ballpark in which Alonso hadn’t homered.
