Michigan is expected to take a step back in 2024 after the departure of longtime head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Oddsmakers have pegged the Wolverines with a preseason win total of 8.5 – well below the 13-0 mark they enjoyed last season en route to a national championship.

Even after coming out on top in January, Michigan comes into this season with the 10th-best odds to both repeat (+3000) and make the College Football Playoff (+150) at FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Big 10 doesn’t appear to be the Wolverines’ to win either.

After winning the conference in each of the past three seasons, Michigan has the fourth-best odds (+850) behind Ohio State (+150), Oregon (+225) and Penn State (+450) to win the revamped Big 10 for a fourth straight season.

AP Top 25 voters have roughly the same evaluation of the Wolverines heading into the season.

Michigan was ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll, one spot behind Penn State.

It’s a new era in Ann Arbor after Harbaugh left to coach the Los Angeles Chargers

Sherrone Moore, who led the Wolverines for four games while Harbaugh was suspended last season, took over the top job after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator.

The Wolverines also lost a ton of talent on their roster.

Star quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum both bolted for the NFL.

Eight other offensive starters left Ann Arbor and several key defensive players are no longer on the team.

Michigan will open its season against Fresno State in Ann Arbor on Aug. 31.

They’re currently sitting as 21.5-point favorites in that game.
