Joe Montana accomplished a number of accolades over his 16 years in the NFL, which included several Super Bowl titles.

But NBC spotted him one too many on Saturday when he was recognized during the third quarter of Notre Dame’s season opener being played in Dublin, Ireland.

Montana played his college football at Notre Dame and helped lead them to the 1977 national title.

He went on to win four Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers.

However, when he appeared on TV screens across the country, Montana had somehow become a “5-Time Super Bowl Champion.”

It was an embarrassing gaffe for those in the NBC Sports production truck putting together the broadcast.

Montana’s presence in Ireland for the game was notable considering he hadn’t been around the program much in recent years.

The departure of former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and the arrival of Marcus Freeman has helped bring Montana back in the fold, according to The Athletic’s Pete Samson.

“The Kelly relationship basically soured him on Notre Dame. He couldn’t remember the last Notre Dame game he attended. But he did develop a relationship with Freeman in the past year,” Sampson posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Montana helped the 49ers win Super Bowls in 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1990, but never got the chance to bring the organization a fifth one after that.

He helped San Francisco post a 14-2 record during the regular season in 1990 and they reached the NFC Championship game before falling to the New York Giants.

An elbow injury cost Montana the 1991 season and most of the 1992 campaign.

Steve Young eventually eclipsed Montana and in 1993, the latter was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Young lifted the 49ers to the franchise’s fifth Super Bowl title in 1995.
