The NFL has a gambling problem on its hands.

With the league having already suspended five players this offseason for online sports betting, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that one NFL player lost $8 million gambling during the 2022 NFL season.

He did not specify which player lost the hefty sum of money last season, nor is it known which type of gambling garnered these poor results.

NFL players, as long as they are not on team facilities, are allowed to gamble on sports outside the NFL.

The PFT story questioned why the NFL would have such a policy

The story did not specify if legal sports gambling was the cause of the losses.

It could be referring to casino games, like slot machines, roulette or blackjack.

The gambling losses could also be attributed to the less conventional bets that people make.

For instance, a handshake bet on the golf course, similar to the insane Michael Jordan golf gambling stories during his career, would qualify as gambling losses.

Athletes are also known for their high-stakes card games when on the road together.

Those bets are less consequential than the sports wagers that got multiple players suspended this off-season.

Four Lions players, including last year’s first-round pick Jameson Williams, were suspended for placing either NFL bets or bets on college games while on team grounds.

Commanders defensive lineman Shaka Toney was also implicated in that wave of suspensions.

Williams will serve a six-game suspension during the regular season for making an acceptable bet on team grounds.

Betting on the NFL?

Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers was reportedly caught placing multiple NFL bets – including some on his own team.

Regardless of who placed the bets and what the player bet on, $8 million is a whopping figure to lose in just one season.

Non-NFL personnel are not allowed to bet on any sport in any capacity.
