Baker Mayfield will officially be facing his former team in Week 1.
The Panthers announced that Mayfield will be their starting quarterback for the 2022 season — meaning he will be under center when they face the Browns in Carolina on Sept. 11.
Mayfield won the job over former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, who struggled under center in Carolina last year, throwing for nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games.
Carolina traded a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Browns for Mayfield earlier this offseason, after a miserable fourth season in Cleveland that led to the two parties going their separate ways. Mayfield throw for 3,010 yards in 2021 with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, as he battled through an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.
To replace Mayfield, the Browns ended up trading three first-round picks and giving $230 million guaranteed to Deshaun Watson, who faces over two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct and will be suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season. Jacoby Brissett is expected to be Cleveland’s starter in Week 1.
Mayfield and the Panthers are currently 1.5-point favorites in the Week 1 showdown, according to FanDuel.
