Camdan McWright, a running back on San Jose State’s football team, is dead after an accident in which he was struck by a school bus.

He was 18.

“We lost an amazing young man tragically this morning,” SJSU coach Brent Brennan said in a statement on the school’s web site. “Camdan had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that. We are still trying to deal with the news of this tragedy, and appreciate everyone’s support during these difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McWright family and I want them to know we are all here for them. Camdan will always be in our hearts and he will be profoundly missed.”

According to Fox affiliate KTVU, McWright was riding a rented electric scooter on the way to work out.

He was in the vicinity of S 10th and Reed streets in San Jose — a couple of blocks from campus — shortly before 7:00 am when he was struck by the bus. The San Jose Police Department told the outlet that 15 students were on the bus during the accident.

The San Jose Mercury-News reports that McWright was pronounced dead at the scene.

McWright was a three-star recruit who played at St Genevieve High School in Pacoima, CA.

McWright’s San Jose State football bio says that he rushed for 1,667 yards — averaging nearly 13 yards per carry — and 24 touchdowns his senior year of high school. A communications major, he aspired to be a sports TV analyst.

His first appearance for the Spartans came on Oct. 7 against UNLV. He got three carries in San Jose State’s 40-7 victory.

“We are all crushed by the tragic loss of Camdan McWright,” AD Jeff Konya said. “The San José State community is a very close one, and the campus is devastated. We lost a very bright, talented young man too soon. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the McWright family.”

San Jose State is scheduled to play New Mexico State on Saturday; the game is pending, per the school.

“SJSU will do what’s best for the student-athletes,” it said in its release.

McWright is the second Division I football player to die this week. Mississippi State offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland was found dead at a church days before his 19th birthday. His cause of death remains under investigation.
