When you gotta go, you gotta go.

This was the case for Peruna, the black Shetland pony and mascot for SMU, who trotted onto the field Friday night during the Mustangs’ game against Navy and delivered a deuce, thus delaying things by about 15 minutes.

“Cleaning up the field near the 40-yard line, right after SMU scored the touchdown, they did bring the live pony mascot across the way,” ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Roy Philpott told analyst Andre Ware.

“Just deducing what happened here, perhaps a little leftovers remained on the field of play, requiring some extra attention. And I do believe I have seen it all now.”

SMU has used Peruna as its mascot dating back 90 years, to 1932. The first one, a four-year-old pony donated by Arlington Downs race track owner T.E. Jones, made his debut for a game against Texas A&M.

This version of the mascot is the ninth pony to hold the job. A veteran, he’s been the mascot for SMU since 2011. He apparently has a reputation as being the loudest pony in the Peruna series.

Ultimately, SMU defeated Navy 40-34. SMU’s quarterback Tanner Mordecai was 20-for-27 passing for 336 yards and three touchdowns — with no interceptions. He also rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Former president George W. Bush was in attendance at Gerald J. Ford Stadium for the matchup.
