A few weeks ago, I used this space to lament the ever-depressing, never-changing absence of top-level college football in New York. It is a gaping hole in the sporting landscape of the country’s biggest city, made more apparent when the Yankees and Mets bow out before the playoffs and the Jets and Giants kill hope by October.

Though college football will essentially always be enjoyed from afar, the area’s supply of college basketball teams remains deeper than any other city. This season, several of those teams could help produce the greatest success in a generation. There is much potential, much to look forward to, much to care about before March.
