The ladies of “The View” swiftly defended Taylor Swift from accusations of “fatphobia” on Tuesday’s episode.
The name-calling started when Swift released the music video for her new song “Anti-Hero” last week. In one scene, the slender Swift steps on a scale that reads “fat” instead of any numbers, as a judgmental clone of herself disapproves over her shoulder.
Some online trolls deemed the sight “fatphobic,” claiming Swift was fat-shaming women who are her size or larger.
But “The View” hosts think that is a stretch.
“She was just describing a personal experience,” co-host Sunny Hostin said. “And quite frankly, it’s a personal experience that a lot of women experience.”
“And men,” the other ladies chirped.
The “Shake It Off” songstress shared her experiences with an eating disorder in her 2020 Netflix documentary, “Miss Americana,” and elaborated on her struggles in an interview with Variety.
“It’s not good for me to see pictures of myself every day,” Swift said in the doc. “It’s only happened a few times, and I’m not in any way proud of it. A picture of me where I feel like I looked like my tummy was too big, or … someone said that I looked pregnant … and that’ll just trigger me to just starve a little bit — just stop eating.”
“I remember how, when I was 18, that was the first time I was on the cover of a magazine,” she told Variety. “And the headline was like ‘Pregnant at 18?’ And it was because I had worn something that made my lower stomach look not flat. So I just registered that as a punishment.”
“Every single person knew what she meant,” “View” co-host Sara Haines added to Tuesday’s conversation. “It was beyond ‘fat,’ it was, ‘you’re not good enough, you’ve been bad.’ If you were better or stronger, this number would be different. It says so many things in one word.”
“Just let her have her feelings. If you don’t like the song, don’t listen to it,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said. “Why are you wasting your time on this? Leave that girl — you know, you all want to say something about Taylor Swift. Leave her ass alone, OK?”
“What is she supposed to put on this scale, ‘plump?’ That doesn’t work,” co-host Joy Behar added.
“Part of what makes Taylor Swift so uniquely excellent is she shares so much of herself with her audience,” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said. “She talks about her break-ups, she talks about her relationships, her different struggles. So on the one hand, we can’t expect her to put herself out there and give that to us, the listeners, then react and say ‘Oh, she shouldn’t tell us about this struggle that she’s having.’”
The “Anti-Hero” music video has already racked up 30 million views since it was released Friday.
Swift appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” Monday, revealing that the music video for “Bejeweled” — which premiered Monday and already has 7 million views — is full of a “psychotic amount” of Easter eggs.
In fact, the “Mastermind” singer said she created a PDF to keep track of them all.
Spotify couldn’t keep up with Swifties’ excitement when “Midnights” dropped Friday, temporarily breaking the streaming service.
