Nigel Farage described Reform edging ahead of the Conservatives in the polls as “remarkable”, in a shift that marks a major step in his rightwing party’s mission to upend British politics to become the UK’s opposition party on July 4.

Reform climbed two percentage points to 19 per cent, overtaking the Tories who remained on 18 per cent, according to a YouGov poll on Thursday, which put Labour on 37 per cent.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Friday, Farage conceded: “I’ll be honest with you, we weren’t ready for this general election… so we’ve had a phenomenal start”.

Farage said Reform does not have a target for a specific number of seats and criticised the UK’s “not fit for purpose” first-past-the-post electoral system. But he said he expected the party to win “many many more votes” than the 4mn Reform’s predecessor, the Brexit party, won in the previous election.
